In 1977 Peter and Gwen Smith obtained 8mm film footage of a pole-like object close to the south-east shore of Loch Ness, rising and then sinking below the surface. Two young men were seen nearby, and were later suspected by some to have been responsible for a hoax, unknown to the Smiths. The original film is shown below.

An experiment to reproduce the effects filmed by Peter and Gwen Smith, based on previous work by Adrian Shine et al, using a fence post, a distant anchor and a length of rope, was carried out in 2002.
